Bourbon Beauty: Donate BOURBON for a great cause!

This story was so moving, I had to share. As you may know, I have a son with a diagnosis of Autism, and stories like this bring so much hope & awareness to our community.  A very sweet local woman I met, is raising bottles of bourbon (that's right, bottles of BOURBON!!) to host a bourbon pull at the FEAT of Louisville Gala this weekend!

They are still accepting bottles, if you'd like to donate, you can contact Donna McGraw at  (502) 741-1982. You can also drop off your bourbon donation at Shane’s Window Tinting at 7701 Dixie Highway or Theraplace at 4121 Shelbyville Road.

I really hope you'll consider donating!  Good Luck Donna and FEAT of Louisville. I can't wait to hear about your success!

Bourbon Beauty: Happy Summer Solstice - Morning Ritual

I can't begin to explain how much I love when spring & summer come around. While I don't care much for being outside in the physical wilderness (I don't like bugs or heat - true story...), I really do not enjoy long winters. The short days, the cold, it triggers me and unfortunately seasonal depression hits me hard.

This past winter was particularly difficult on me, and its refreshing to feel like I'm finally coming out of my shell. (Huge thank you to my mom for always being supportive and encouraging me to get a little bit of TLC. Side note: Never be ashamed to take care of your mental health as well as physical health. As women we tend to wear many hats - our health is important).

To celebrate, I thought it would be fun to write something up on enjoying and bringing in the sunshine, fresh air, & some self love.

Celebrating Summer Solstice - Morning Routine
  • In the morning - Steep some herbal tea | I prefer iced | & meditate/stretch (before kids are awake).
  • Enjoy iced tea while sitting outside - hearing the birds and enjoying the scent of the morning dew.
  • Ground bare feet on the earth- praying and thanking God (or maybe just reflecting) on everything I'm thankful for.
  • Make a point to go near or in water outdoors.
  • Start and maintain a morning skincare routine - Do a facial massage after bathing.
  • Replenish your skin! Drink lots of water & fresh fruit. (Incorporate collagen into a fresh smoothie).
  • Begin the day with a happy soul and set great intentions for the day.

My Favorite way to make Jasmine Iced Tea
  • Dragon Pearl Jasmine (My favorite brand is by Harney & Sons)
  • Boiling Water
  • Mexican Raw Sugar Cane Crystals
  • 2 ice cubes + enough to fill a tall tumbler
Before Teavana shut down their local store, I could never make a good cup of tea! I loved my Jasmine tea from restaurants, but mine always tasted burnt. One day I asked the woman how she made it, and it was life altering (and my bank was happier lol). The trick was the ice cubes so I wouldn't burn my tea - otherwise making it bitter.
Method- Bring water to a rolling boil. Carefully, pour boiling water over tea sachet in a deep cup, quickly adding to ice cubes, and stirring in sugar to taste. Let steep for 2 minutes. Fill tumbler with ice, and pour over tea.

Do you do anything to ease stress? What's on your bucket list this summer?

Bourbon Beauty: The Barre Code Middletown, New Kids Room!

Not too long ago, I started again on my fitness journey (as a mom, its a personal struggle finding the balance between work, events, finances, maintaining my home, boys' school, Dr. appointments, Date nights, my list goes on!), and I began to wonder the age old question, "Can women truly have it all?". In my opinion, I think the answer is yes, just not all at the same time.

Finding the balance can be difficult, but, not impossible. Once you start incorporating "normal" life after adjusting to kids, finding the balance is much easier when you find a community that is child friendly. This is where The Barre Code comes in!

Finding gyms in Louisville that has childcare has been hard. There were several that I thought would be great to join, but not having a place to drop off my kiddos for me was a huge deterrent. (If I have to schedule childcare ($$ + gas + time to drop off and pick up kids.... = hassle.), it just wasn't worth the effort to join. *shrug*

It was brought to my attention that The Barre Code in Middletown now has a Kids Room! New studio owner, Heather Thomas, sat down with me to talk about her *new* endeavor, and the new addition to her studio. When asked what inspired her to become the new studio owner of The Barre Code, she said:
I have been an instructor at The Barre Code for three years now, and I was also the Studio Manager/Master Trainer for two of those years. In September 2018, I became the Studio Owner as a next step to keep The Barre Code community thriving in Louisville. It is truly a dream come true to be the studio owner. I couldn’t imagine my life without The Barre Code, and I know our members feel the same. The members and staff inspire me every day! They are what make The Barre Code what it is today.
I asked her what advice she would give to new moms who may find group fitness intimidating? (I've been there!)
At The Barre Code, our mission is to empower women and encourage them to find their best self. Our workouts will help you find YOUR strong, and you will have the support you need to get there. Now that I am a Mom, “Me” time is more important than ever. Motherhood is amazing, but also so challenging. Moms are always multi-tasking, and doing so much for others. Making time for yourself will make you a better person for others in the end.
I also asked if there was anything she thought new moms should know before joining The Barre Code?
Be patient with yourself and listen to your body during class just as you did throughout your pregnancy. Instructors give modifications and advancements so that you can tailor the workout to fit your needs. Week by week you will notice a difference in your strength, but patience and consistency is key.

I was so excited to hear more about her new kids' room:
Kids room is a child watch service. We take care of your kids while you get your 50-minute workout in. We keep a 5:1 child-staff ratio, and it is available M/W/F and Sat mornings. We hope to add more days and times as demand increases. You can reserve your spot on Mindbody just as you do a regular class. Cost is $5 for a drop in or $40 for a 10-Pack.

Over the past few years, I have seen a number of our members have to cancel their memberships after having kids. I want The Barre Code to be a part of a Mom’s journey pre and postnatal. Having this option, we can hopefully keep them part of our community in the future, and bring more Moms into our environment.

I personally love the new changes to The Barre Code, and can't wait for the kids and I to see what its like!

What do you do for me time? How do you balance your life?

Bourbon Beauty: Kendra Scott Holiday 2018

I was invited by Kendra Scott in Louisville, Ky. to check out their beautiful new line of goodies! I'm a huge fan of their jewelry. (I've purchased some pieces before, so I was very familiar with the brand before I was invited in.).

Rose gold is my favorite gold! I loved all of the dainty pieces they had, it was hard to choose.

I love the charms Kendra Scott carries, and was excited when they offered to gift me some pieces to share with you. Each one comes with a sweet little card and polishing case. I chose the Unicorn horn and Unicorn for two reasons.  1, because It reminds me of my childhood and sweet times I spent with my mom and dad (I always chose Unicorn face paints at ANY fair we went to, and I decorated everything Unicorn in my room). 2, I also get to enjoy seeing the Unicorn decor my baby niece has! I think of her when I look down at it. The elephant has a special meaning because my mom always told me they were lucky, and evil eyes are known as a symbol in my culture to ward off evil (and ward off bad vibes from negativity!).

I love that every charm can mean something different for everyone! Not to mention it gives a little eye candy when you look down at your bling!

I adored these pieces so much, I asked if I could have a look at their line to share with anyone looking for Christmas gifts! These were my favorite pieces.

Aria Gold Statement Earrings $265

I LOOOOOOVE how pretty these earrings look!! All. The. Sparkles. These would look amazing to wear to a Christmas party, or maybe bringing in the New Year!
Holiday Large Tumbler Candle $65

Their Rose Quartz Candle is my ALL time favorite (If you haven't smelled their candles, I urge you to go take a peek!). I haven't smelled this one, but on their site it listed it as Rosemary and Pine notes (very Christmas-y!). I think these would make the perfect hostess gift. I love how beautiful this would look on my vanity.

Malia Bangle Sets $135

Bangles, bangles, and more bangles! These are a staple in jewelry collection. They're so effortlessly chic, and a easily dressed up or down. Both the Rose Gold and Yellow Gold look amazing.

Moody Mood Pendant Necklace $95

I don't really wear much color when it comes to jewelry, but this piece looked so striking. I think it would pair beautifully with a cream or white cashmere sweater. This looks very festive, gorgeous statement piece.

Rufus Pendant Necklace $60

Sticking with me favorite rose gold, I loved the look of this necklace as well! I prefer dainty pieces, and this one looks glam. So pretty! I have some exciting news coming up with them this spring, but until then, I thought it would be fun to give you a peek into what they have in store for the holiday season!

If you're local to Louisville, definitely make a trip to Oxmoor Mall! You'll find the perfect gift for her.

Bourbon Beauty: Bento Asian Kitchen & Sushi Review

It's no surprise how much I love Asian food. Sushi, Boba, Lumpia, Pancit... I could go on and on with foods I adore! Whenever a new sushi place opens up, I get really excited, but once I compare it to my most favorite place in town, it just never really compares!

According to Wikipedia:

Bento (弁当, bentō) is a single-portion take-out or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice or noodles, fish or meat, with pickled and cooked vegetables, in a box.

You know my sushi expectations heighten, when there is a sign that literally supports my sushi habit.

Here is the menu they have stacked as you wait in line. I loved the bento idea, but I was on a mission to try sushi and their Poke bowls.

Per Wikipedia:
Poke /poʊˈkeɪ is diced raw fish served as either an appetizer or as a main course and is one of the main dishes of Native Hawaiian cuisine.
It's interesting, I had always considered Poke to be a Hawaiian dish. I never correlated it with Japanese food. I wasn't aware of the Japanese influence in Hawaii, but apparently (according to a quick google search), Japanese people are the 2nd largest Ethnic group in Hawaii. You learn something new everyday! I'm still unsure how poke came to be, but its peaked my interest. (Back to the food...)

I forgot all of the ingredients I chose, but from what I can see on my picture it was everything but the kitchen sink haha. I chose 3 different types of proteins (Salmon, Spicy Salmon, & Hamachi (Yellow Tail). I also chose sticky rice, seaweed salad, avocado, green onion, daikon, cucumber, and pretty much every seasoning they allowed on it.

It was DELICIOUS! Now, I have to admit this was my first time trying Poke at a restaurant, so I don't have much to compare it to. Although I've never had poke, I challenge you to find someone that loves sushi more than I do LOL. I *know* my sushi, and for sushi grade fish, it was great!

While the Poke bowl was great, the nigiri was *okay*. It tasted good, but when I compare it to Oishii Sushi, meh. The tempura roll was edible, but I wasn't crazy about the mayo, and the shrimp tempura tasted more like breaded shrimp than legitimate tempura. It was okay. I'd eat the sushi again if my favorite places were closed, but I wouldn't make a special trip for the sushi.

This was why I made my trip to Bento, BOBA. The closest boba place to me is Nam Nam Cafe, but driving down busy Shelbyville Rd, isn't always ideal. Both places must use a mix, because it doesn't taste anything like the boba I get in Chicago. That being said, its okay! It fixes my craving, but I prefer the chewier boba pearls from Nam Nam if I'm being completely honest. I purchased Taro flavored (Purple Yams), but next time I may try the Litchi flavor!

All in all, the Poke was great, everything else was okay! I'd eat there again, but I'll probably get some noodles or teriyaki instead of the sushi rolls. I would make a trip just for Poke.

What's your favorite place for sushi?

Bourbon Beauty: Louisville Salt Cave

I'm always looking for new holistic practices to try out. I was feeling a bit under the weather, and I read that salt caves were a great way to boost immunity. I wasn't sure what to expect, when I read about (Halo Therapy) Salt Caves I pictured an underground cave with salt crystals everywhere.

I'll be honest, when I realized it was located in a strip mall, I was a little confused. This was not at all what I expected when I read "cave". I entered the location not sure what I was going to find! (Clearly I didn't do enough research before going lol.)

Inside, I was greeted by the owner (Very very sweet lady, thoroughly explained to me the process, and what products they offered.) and I browsed around a bit before my session (because shopping...).

The process to sign up is very simple. You can log onto their website and easily secure your spot/ appointment (and you can see how many other people will be in the cave as well). They also host other wellness classes (one with children I'll blog about later), as well as shorter appointments meant to made during lunch breaks.

I chose to do a walk in. You have to be there at least 10 minutes before the slot starts. They give you clean socks to wear inside if you don't have any, (shoes are *not* allowed). You place your shoes and belongings in open cubbies (if you'd rather not do that, I suggest to leave belongings, purse, etc. in your car).

The cave itself is very cool, so its suggested you dress warm (I used capris leggings and a t-shirt), I brought my own small blanket and was very comfortable. They do have blankets on top of the chairs for you to use, but since I'm a crazy person germa-phobe I chose to use my own.

This is what the cave looks like, you open the door and its basically a room with a ton of salt on the floor (feels like you're stepping onto sand), and salt forms along the walls. They have six zero gravity chairs you sit on, and recline if you choose to.

Once your session starts, they close the door, and the ambiance is very calming. They have pretty strung lights hung on the ceiling, and the Himalayan forms are *glowing* throughout the cave. You hear a machine softly crunching salt as its blown into the air. As you take deep breaths, you can literally taste the salt in your mouth and on your lips. I swear I could feel the particles every time I breathed in. I took advantage of the time I had, and took very deep breaths

Once the session was done, I heard a chime, and the door opened. She nicely said to take my time coming out.

I purchased a bag of Himalayan rocks, the owner said some people soaked them in a bit of water over night, and add spoonfuls of the salt water into normal drinking water. I also purchased the rock ball which you can roll under your feet for healing purposes. (As always, this is a post just recording my own personal experiences. I'm not a Dr., so do your own research before trying these out lol.). I'll test them out and blog how they worked out for me.

Final Thoughts:

I loved the experience! I found it to be very calming, and soothing. The next day, I could still taste salt in my mouth, and my pain was pretty much gone with just one session.

Salt Caves are supposed to be great for healing respiratory issues, skin issues (such as eczema/psoriasis), easing aches and pains, the list really goes on and on.

I would definitely go again, and intend to visit soon. I enjoyed it so much so, that I invited my sister in law and niece to join my kids and I for another session. I even have plans with another mom to bring her little girl to join us too! Lots of future plans :-)

Thank you so much to the Louisville Salt Cave for taking the time to answer my questions. Great hospitality! :-)

If you were interested in trying out a Salt Cave, I hope this helped with a little insight!

Bourbon Beauty: My week in photos.

"I didn't lose myself when I became a mother. I found myself."

While watching Tati's channel on YouTube (yes, I watch and ADORE beauty and lifestyle videos on YouTube. I've attempted to record some, when I feel more comfortable in front of the camera I'll share lol.), and saw that CVS pharmacy carried a new K Beauty line from KISS cosmetics. It said K beauty "inspired", but the products did say they were made in Korea. I don't know if the ingredients are from Korea as well? Regardless, Tati gave it great review (the concealer and liner), so I figured it was worth a shot. Plus they have a great return policy! (side note: its been YEARS since I've been in a CVS pharmacy. I can't believe how many products they carry.)

My kids were *troopers*. I literally went to 3 CVS to find what I was looking for. They were totally fine with it, definitely earned a treat for the day.

I forgot to take pictures of the other goodies, I'll probably post it on Instagram. I purchased a peach concealer, ElishaCoy Snail Cream, a Gold Peel off mask by JOAH, and an eyeliner. So far the snail cream isn't as hydrating as I thought, but it absorbs quickly. We'll see how it works out.

Rose. Flavored. Lattes. From The Coffee Zone at Westport Village (Louisville, Ky.). You're welcome.

Bourbon Beauty: Chai (Tea) Recipe

Tea.
 (n.) A hug in a cup.

Tea has always had a special place in my heart. Whenever I was ill, or not feeling well, my mom would always have a "te de manzanilla" (Chamomile Tea), ready to soothe whatever ailment I had going on. I don't know if it was the healing properties in the tea that actually eased my symptoms, or feeling the warm comfort of my mom soothing me, but tea always made me feel better.

As a little girl, I have fond memories of my grandfather working outside on his "Beauty Queen" truck. I remember my dad telling me to make him his iced tea, so it would cool him down during our hot Chicago summer. I still remember running into our old garage, the scent of car oil hit me as I opened that garage door, & yelling for Vito excited I had his iced tea.

Chicago was the melting pot of culture, and although Ethnic food was *always* in my home growing up, visiting friends' homes was where I really had my exposure to other people and their food. I loved seeing what their moms' were cooking, and the different snacks they had in their home. The one that sticks out to me most, was visiting my Indian friend, and smelling the delicious Chai (tea) her mom had prepared on the stove. Cinnamon and cloves (along with the faint scent of curry) filled the air, and I was intrigued. I was too embarrassed to ask for a taste, but I quickly jotted down the name of the tea before running home -and asking my mom to buy it. (Side note: I miss the days I could ask my mom to add my "wants" onto her grocery list hahaha.).

When I first attempted to make Chai, it tasted awful! I didn't realize it was prepared with milk and not water. (Its funny, because Mexican Hot Chocolate never has water, its always made with milk. I should've known better!) I don't remember how I came to the conclusion it was made with milk, my mom probably suggested it. (This was way before smart phones with google existed, LOL).

As an adult, I absolutely adore tea, and the many variations of it. I'm a huge foodie, and tasting teas (as well as preparing them differently) is something that excites me! I'm not sure if this is the authentic way to prepare Chai, but this is how I do it. Adjust your sweetness accordingly.

Preparation of Indian Chai (Tea)

Ingredients:
2 Cups of Organic Milk
2 Tazo Chai Tea Bags
2 TBSP of Raw Cane Sugar
Method:
Pour 2 cups of milk into a small pot. Bring the heat up to a rolling simmer, taking care not to scald the milk. (Milk burns very easily!) Turn off the heat. Place the tea bags, and the sugar into your cup. *Carefully* pour your hot milk into the cup, and let it steep for about 4 minutes or so. (I've never had bitter Chai before, you can let it steep for quite a while, and the spice intensifies the longer you let it steep). Enjoy!
Alternate Method:
If you prefer Iced Tea, cook as directed. Let the tea cool, and pour over ice and enjoy! Feel free to add a dried rosebud (as I did) for garnish! Dried Roses available here.

What are your favorite teas? Have you tried a milk tea before?

Bourbon Beauty: Awakenings Boutique Real Faces of Cancer

Wig Available at Awakenings Boutique

A couple of weeks ago, I attended an event (and did a social media takeover, which you can still see on my Instagram stories!) for a beautiful shop called “Awakenings Boutique”. I’ve written about the boutique before, and how its touched my heart. It’s a shop located here in Louisville, Ky., that specializes in wigs, hair pieces, turbans, and other healing essentials for those affected by cancer. That article, was an especially difficult one to write, considering it hadn’t been long after my grandmother’s passing.

Pictured:

This month marks the one-year anniversary of her passing (crazy to think how quickly time sees to be flying), and it felt very fitting that I was able to partake, in such a healing movement, during this exact time. Everyone deals with the grieving process differently, and for myself, seeing others persevere past such a difficult moment, was a very healing experience for me.

The purpose of this event was to gather beautiful, strong, courageous women to give a real face to cancer. As we have all noticed, media has been slowly changing, more and more people are demanding for campaigns to show what real bodies, real faces, real HUMANS look like. This story is no different to those affected by cancer. Models using wigs presented in these magazines are not real. Why not place real women dealing with cancer under those wigs, and show their beauty, strength, and power?

(Heidi Herrman Fuller - Owner @ Awakenings Boutique)

The event (curated by the amazing owner of Awakenings Boutique, Heidi Herrman Fuller), was held at a photography studio owned by Hollie Colwick in La Grange, Ky. The studio was so pretty! I was so impressed. Not only by the aesthetics of the beautiful space, but the beautiful energy and sweetness of the photographer. Hollie was this amazing breathe of fresh air, to see her positivity and kindness was very heart warming.

When I arrived, the beautiful models were getting ready for their photo shoot. Primp Style Lounge donated their styling for the event (I can’t even begin to express how moved I felt that these women all came together to help!). If you’re looking for a make-up artist/stylist, I highly recommend you check them out, www.PrimpStyleLounge.com. Primp Style Lounge did an amazing job with everyone's makeup, I know where I'll be booking for my next special event! Christine Mueller, of Christine Mueller Photography, was so kind, she donated makeup from The Beauty Counter. Everyone looked phenomenal!

Beautiful Jessica Taylor, owner of That Cute Little Shop Boutique, donated clothing from her boutique (the outfits were so stylish and her clothing is so unique. I could be wrong, but believe I was told there were only about 6 of each piece available in her store. Never worry about wearing the same dress to an event lol), and the dresses were from Gretchen Scott Designs. When I say women got together to make this event possible, women really GOT TOGETHER and donated whatever they could to help the wonderful cause! Calinda Young from Life Group was also sweet enough to donate gift baskets to each of the recipients <3<3<3

Once the women were done with the fab team from Primp Style, they went to the next room to get their wigs on with Heidi, (her boutique not only donated them their wigs, but also gave them another wig to gift to someone else in need! So many blessings in one afternoon.)

Hollie did an outstanding job photographing all of the women! It was such a joy to see how much fun everyone was having. Throughout the event, the women were also interviewed by Today's Woman, and WLKY News. Everyone was so proud to tell their own stories, these women were so courageous. It was a blessing to be in their presence.

Debra Locker, of Locker PR, and her team did an amazing job orchestrating this event. So many empowering women under one roof.

(All of the awesome women who donated their time, love, and support!)

Congratulations to Heidi Fuller on all of your success! You are a huge inspiration to all women. A big warm thank you to everyone who was able to help make this event happen. You gave a voice, and real face to cancer, and lots of love to the courageous women who participated in this event.

Thank you!
