Bourbon Beauty: Red Carpet Ready for the Derby Eve Gala

Derby is 18 days away. 18 DAYS AWAY... I'm both excited, and just a tiny bit nervous... Excited for the fun, but nervous because I want to make sure everything looks perfect! I'm especially excited for the Derby Eve Gala coming up.

With only 3 weeks left, I thought it would be fun to share my count down of things to do leading up to a Red Carpet event!

3 weeks before derby:

#1: Outfit.
I feel it's super important to have my dress and accessories put together, ready to go. I like to have this prepared, so that I know what kind of makeup and what nail look I'll be going for. Waiting until the last minute for a dress is such a pain! I'd suggest having it ready at LEAST 3 weeks in advance.

  • Dress (dry cleaned) and ready to go. (If you don't have one picked out, check out my post using a Macy's My stylist!)
  • Heels (cleaned)/ foot protectors/extra pair of foldable flats (LIFE savers after a long night of dancing)
  • Undergarments (Spanx, strapless bra?, Lingerie)
  • Jewelry (chosen, steam cleaned and buffed)
  • Coordinating Accessories.

#2 Body.

3 weeks in advance, I really like to go to town getting my skin prepped. I amp up my water intake/ green tea to help with bloat, and I start exfoliating. Sloughing off dead skin now, will allow for beautiful glowing skin during a big event. There are several ways to do this, but my favorite way is to just purchase a simple sugar scrub (I really enjoy Trader Joes Ginger Grapefruit), and scrub in the shower at least 3x a week. I remove all nail polish, trim my nails, pumice my heels, and MOISTURIZE (My go to at the moment, is Lush Charity Pot)!! (Especially if you plan on sunless tanning. No one wants streaking tans before a big event.)

#3 Face.

During this time, I also exfoliate my face 3x a week, (I love Lush fresh face products for this!) I also do Korean sheets masks after exfoliating (Tony Moly has a great snail mask I adore), and sleep in my favorite sleep pack as well as my lip mask. (Currently I'm LOVING Laniege Lip Mask, and Tony Moly banana balm).

#4 Makeup.

This is the time I purchase any makeup I plan on using for the event, so it gives me ample time to play with it to perfect my look! If I plan on tanning, I get my foundation a bit darker than what I normally use.

My Personal Glam list:
  • Sheet Mask (LOVE using one prior to putting on my makeup. Your face glows!)
  • Moisturizer (Makeup application looks so much better on hydrated skin. (Lush Celestial & Tatcha Water lotion is amazing for dry skin.)
  • Primer (I love NYX Honey Dew Primer)
  • Face Mist (I learned this trick from on of my favorite K Beauty Authors. Mist your face before foundation application, application looks better with hydrated skin).
  • Foundation ( I use Too Faced Born This Way)
  • Concealer (Tarte Shape Tape)
  • Eyebrow Pencil/powder (Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz)
  • Mascara (NYX)
  • Eye Liner
  • Eye Shadows (Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam)
  • Lip Liner
  • Lip Stick/Gloss
  • Blush
  • Contour Powder (Hoola By Benefit)
  • Highlighter Powder (Carli Bybel)
  • Setting Spray (Tatcha)
Once I have my makeup look and products picked out, I like to play with the application before hand so I know exactly what look I'm going for.

#4. Hair.

While I wouldn't suggest changing my look this close to a major event (Kudos to the brave souls that do haha!), Its a good time to get a trim if need be (my hair won't feel so blunt 3 weeks away). I also like to start deep conditioning treatments! I do this about 1x a week. I slather a deep conditioner on my ends of my hair, pull it up, and rinse out after 30 minutes. Rinsing with cold water helps to add shine!

#4. Confirm Appointments!

If I chose to go with a hair stylist, I'd book my hair stylist appointment, as well as manicure appointment, waxing appointment, tanning appointment, etc. Personally, this time around, I'll be doing my own hair and makeup, as well as tanning. I did, however, make my appointment to cut my split ends, and get my nails done. This would also be a great time to purchase any teeth whitening products (I think I'll start next week) or making your appointment to get that done if need be!

What do you do to prepare for an event?

Bourbon Beauty: Smile Brilliant: At Home Teeth Whitening Review

I was approached by a rep for Smile Brilliant!, to see if I'd be interested in trying out some of their products for review. I personally use different brands of teeth whitening products, so I was completely on board to see what it was about.

I was sent out everything pictured above. First, you make these molds by mixing the pastes and placing it into the trays. You make the indentations, and send off to their labratory to make your custom fit trays. (I loved this part because I enjoyed playing with the paste and making my mold lol.)

These are the pastes you mold together and play with before you place it into the tray and bite into it. Then you send it off (pre-labeled/pre-paid package) and wait for your molds to come in.

Here are my molds of my teeth I got back! Super Quick, and easy to do.

These were the whitening gels & de-sensitizing gels that were sent out to me. You just place them into the trays and pop them into your mouth. You can either start out in 15 minute increments, or work up to higher amounts of time on your teeth. The great thing about this, is that the de-sensitizing gel is set up so that you immediately apply it to help out with any sensitivity. (My teeth usually hurt with whitening systems, but I found that this helped quite a bit, and had noticeably less irritation, especially along my gums.

These were my before and after pictures. I def saw a big improvement in the brightness of my teeth! I'm very happy with the product, especially considering these kind of treatments cost upwards of $500 at a dentist office. This makes it super easy & much more cost effective.

Here are other testimonials on their products :-)
Here is a video provided by Smile Brilliant! explaining their product.

Check them out at Smile Brilliant! Have you tried their products before?

Snow Ice Cream! Recipe/DIY

www.instagram.com/AbourbonBeauty

I don't know how the weather is where you live, but Lousville, Ky.? We just got *pummeled* by almost a foot of snow! The last time it snowed (and when it snows, everything shuts down... we literally had a full week of school off due to hazardous road conditions), my kiddos were both ill, so they weren't able to go out and play. Thankfully, this time they were in great health and we were able to enjoy our days off and play outside :-)

A friend of mine had some pictures on instgram of their "snow ice cream", so I thought it would be fun to re-create our own version. I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it actually tasted. I sort of modified my "tres leches" recipe to make a cinnamony-sweet ice cream.

Snow Cream Recipe

What you need:
  • 1 20 Quart Stock pot full of fresh snow.
  • 1/2 a can of Sweetened Condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 cups of whole milk
  • 1 tsp. of ground cinnamon.
  • a container to keep the ice cream in.

Method:

First, as soon as I saw it was starting to snow, I placed a clean stock pot out on my porch to catch fresh clean snow. The next morning, I mixed the condensed milk, cinnamon & whole milk in a container. I then grabbed the fresh snow, scooped out one cup, placed it into a bowl, and mixed a bit of the milk mixture in. Once completely mixed, I took turns placing one cup of snow at a time & the milk mixture until I got it to the consistency I wanted. I've seen versions of snow ice cream that resemble more of a slushy, where as other ones were very thick. We preferred ours a bit on the thick side :-)

After playing in the snow, and enjoying our snow ice cream, & I made some hot chocolate from Nestle Abuelita Hot Chocolate (You've never had hot chocolate until you've tried this stuff! Amazing!). I had every intention of using our snowman wilton kit for hot chocolate, (during their Christmas Vacation) but never had the time to. As much as I'm not a fan of the snow, I'm glad the kids had an awesome snow day, and we were finally able to make the snowmen hot chocolate I thought we had missed out on. :-)

Happy Snow Day!

Dia de los Muertos Wall Decor DIY

Along with our cake, I thought it would be fun to hang some skeleton frames around! I love decorating for the holidays, but I stick to very neutral colors so that it matches with everything in our living room<3

I picked up these canvas boards in a set, a while ago for my sil's bridal shower.

I also grabbed these cute wood cut outs. I was happy that they were raw wood, and not dyed black or white.

I spray painted the purple canvas boards black, and just hot glued the wooden cut outs on top. SO EASY!

I'll probably do something similar for Christmas. Maybe gold and white? Wheels are turning for Thanksgiving and Christmas decor!

Did you do any fun activities for Dia de los Muertos or Halloween?

Bourbon Beauty: Mini Bathroom Fridge (Beauty Post!)

http://www.landoflalas.com/p/disclosure.html

While in the shower, I was thinking about beauty posts that I wanted to write up. In the middle of my shower, I forgot that I needed my face mask. I reached over, and pulled it out of my little refrigerator on my counter. My first thought was "I'm glad I remembered to place it in there, and didn't have to run cold & naked to my kitchen to pull it out of my fridge." (running out freezing cold in the middle of my hot shower is a pain in the butt, ruins any relaxing moment I had lol.). Then I thought, "Hey! maybe I should write about the convenience of this..."

So alas, here's the blog post instead of my beauty DIY :-)

I tend to do a lot of face masks and diy's at home. When you do all natural diy's, they don't typically contain any chemicals or preservatives to help protect them from going bad (like store purchased ones would). When you make face masks with perishable things (like mashed fruits, veggies, etc.), its important to keep these items refrigerated to keep them safe to use. They don't keep forever, but the shelf life is extended by a few days before you need to toss them away.

Keeping them in the kitchen really isn't too much of a hassle, but it if you're like me, I always forget to grab these items before my shower :( I end up running to my kitchen, rummaging for my bottles of goodies, and then resuming my shower. Not fun.

A few years ago, my hubs went out and got me this mini hello kitty fridge. Its been perfect to store all of my homemade face masks! Its super cute, and it keeps all of my beauty products within easy reach for my bath time or night time beauty routine.

When I went on my first trip to lush, and I was pleasantly surprised to know that their products are so natural, some of them even need refrigeration to keep them fresh (I was amazed to find fresh healthy options for my skin.)! Mini fridges are perfect for these sorts of items that you'd rather not keep in the kitchen.

Not only is it great for face masks/scrubs, but I also find it handy for:

Setting Sprays (Feels very cooling to spray over or under my makeup.)
Perfume (Feels cooling as well.)
DIY Sprays (I use apple cider vinegar, and spray it into cotton balls for a toner.)
Facial Toners
Eye drops (Cooling effect on irritated eyes)
Medicines (some pills & certain birth control need to be kept cool. Easier to remember to take before bed!)

I've read people even put their foundations in there for the cooling effect & preservation. I personally find it *too* cold on my face. Also, I don't know if that does anything to the oxidation process (perhaps changing the color until it warms up on my face?). If I'm in a rush, I don't have time to see if the color is going to warm up, or how my contouring is going to look in comparison to my cold foundation.

If I have products that don't fit in it, I just pour it into little spray bottles so it fits in my fridge :-)

If Hello Kitty isn't your thing, I did find a few on Ebay, Amazon, & Target as well. Just google Portable mini fridge.

This is really a splurge product, not really something out of necessity... but, it really does help me to keep everything in one spot. Its just inconvenient to keep things I need in another room. Would you keep a little fridge in your bathroom? I read that this is very popular in Asian countries (I thought I was a weirdo for keeping something like this!)

Pumpkin Puree Face Mask DIY

I'm always looking for natural ways to cleanse and brighten my complexion. I have Atopic Dermatitis, which causes my skin to have small dry spots from certain products. All natural is usually the way to go.

Pumpkin is full of vitamins and anti-oxidants, some of them include;
  • Alpha & Beta Carotene
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
One of the reasons I use this mask/scrub during the chilly weather, is because the enzymes in pumpkin help dissolve dry skin cells. Also, the Alpha-Hydroxy acids help to brighten and smooth out the skin.

I personally love adding peppermint to my face masks. It gives me a great "cooling" sensation, and makes my skin feel extra clean. Use very sparingly, and adjust the measurements as needed. Essential oils are very concentrated, and the potency can cause irritation if not used in correct moderation.

Pumpkin Face Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

3-4 drops of essential oil (I used peppermint)
1/3 cup Ground Almond Flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar

Mix all of the ingredients, place into a sealable bowl. Keep it in the fridge, I typically use it within 5 days.

I placed everything into a hello kitty container I got from Target in the dollar bins. It was super easy to do, and I feel good knowing the ingredients in my skin care.

What's your favorite at home beauty DIY?

**Editor's Note** This face scrub is very "wet". Its best to be patted on, and scrubbed with a face cloth since the little bits of pumpkin can easily fall off. The facial scrubber helps to rub the pumpkin in while exfoliating :-)

All Natural Raw Pumpkin Puree

I wanted to try some new recipes using pumpkin ('tis the season!), so what better way than to use my Magimix.

Raw Pumpkin Puree Recipe
What you need:
1 Small Pie Pumpkin
1 and 2/3 cups of distilled water

Dice up the small pie pumpkin (remove the seeds, and cut off the stem). Place the diced up pumpkin pieces into the Magimix, cover, add the water, and pulse it until you get it to a thick paste like consistency. That's it! Super Easy.

I scooped it into 3 mason jars, and placed it into the fridge for later use that week. I used the raw puree in a few recipes I tried out, along with making a DIY all natural face mask. I'll post the face mask recipe next :-)

Have you tried making pumpkin puree before? I don't think I'll ever purchase the canned version again.

Fall meals to try!

I've been soooo super busy. I promise things will be picking up soon :-)

This next week, to keep things chugging along with fall inspiration, I based my weekly menu on fall foods that I found on pinterest. I've been sticking to a low carb diet (Info and result post in the works now), so I made my meal plan somewhat around that. Although I'm no longer preparing for my brother's & sil's wedding, I decided that on Monday, I will resume my low carb lifestyle until I get down to my goal weight. {I've had a long week full of cheating...}

Anyways, here are my meals for this week. I can't wait to try some of these babies out.

Hopefully all of these taste as great as they look (chances are I'll probably tweak a few of these to ingredients I already have on hand.

How is your fall coming along? I myself can't wait to try a few crafts.

Summer Nail Inspiration

Summer is full blown, and I'm loving every second of it. I went to Chicago (Post coming soon!) and all of the people watching makes me want to go out and just revamp my entire closet. I bought some high low dresses at Target recently, & I think next on my list are maybe some rompers and a light blazer for the evenings. Looking around for accessories, I realized I hadn't really done anything with my nails in a while. I thought it would be fun to round up some nail designs<3

I usually stick to nudes and low key colors (easy to match with outfits!), but I wouldn't mind venturing out to some other designs. A friend of mine just introduced me to some nail designs that I'll be sharing soon<3 Do your nail styles change during the summer?

Apartment Patio Ideas

With spring weather coming up, I've had a bit of a decorating bug. My itty bitty patio could use a little bit of love, so I scoured Pinterest for ways to make it my own. Unfortunately, I've had a few things stolen off of my patio... So I'll probably keep anything that can be easily carried off indoors.

I *love* how this looks. Its very simple, just a barrel with a glass top laid on top. I'm not a fan of country or rustic looks, but this looks very clean<3 I think the flowers add a nice touch.

This is soooo pretty, and clever! I actually recently purchased 2 folding chairs at the thrift store for $3 a piece. I plan on painting it gold with a cream seat on it.

The flower pots caught my attention. I don't have a metal rail on my patio, but I like the idea of white planters.

I love the idea of using canvas/drop cloths for curtains. It looks nice, and offers a bit of privacy. I think I'm going to ask my mom for help on a project like this... She's much better at sewing than I am.

My apartment only allows electric grills, but I'm having a hard time finding a small one. I wonder if they make terra cotta ones? This one is really cute, although I'm pretty sure this on uses coal. Since I don't have much space on my patio, I really would need a small one.

Last but not least, I love the idea of a bar cart! I don't know how practical it would be on an open patio.. You kind of have to step up to get into my doorway, so it wouldn't make sense to use it to bring stuff outside. Maybe carry it out, and use it to place foods on? I'm a huge fan of gold and copper colors.

Have you gotten the spring cleaning bug yet? I'm very excited for the warmer weather.

St. Patrick's Day Ideas

Looks like a fun activity to do while the boys are little<3

I can't believe St. Patrick's Day is almost here. Seems like we just got done celebrating New Year's. Although, I can't say I'm not excited for spring! I was scouring Pinterest to find some neat ideas to do with the boys. I think I'll probably do a special grocery run to grab some goodies. (I can't believe how gorgeous the weather is today!! Its supposed to be in the 70's tomorrow.<3 Love it!)

(I love how this looks.)

Any interesting plans for St. Patrick's Day? I might decide on making a dinner out of it... I know the boys would enjoy making some Leprechaun traps.
