I love, love, LOVE traveling ethnic stores to be able to recreate my favorite snacks and dishes. Asian stores are by far my top choice to visit. Their wide arrangement of savory and sweet candies always keeps coming back!
One of my favorite candy brands are Meiji. They are well known for their chocolate poke (Long thin biscuits covered in chocolate. I like strawberry, banana, chocolate, milk and strawberry flavored.), Strawberry chocolates, & Koala bear shaped biscuits with chocolate filling. They taste so good! Not to mention that their packaging is extremely cute. Very Kawaii. I save the tiny boxes, maybe I'll find a cute craft to do something with them. Pinterest should have something =X
Some other items I look for:

With my Salmon Roe I made Sushi "Rice".
I also purchased sushi grade Ika (Raw Squid) and served it on sushi rice. If you're ever interested on making home made sushi, I really recommend purchasing Sushi For Dummies. Great Recipes and tips!
When you purchase Natto, it comes in a little Styrofoam box, frozen. I remove the thin paper & condiments, and leave at room temp to defrost. (Not sure if that's the proper way, but that's what I do lol.)
This is what it looks like defrosted! Its very sticky, and a little slimy. I love the peanuty flavor, The soy sauce and hot mustard go great together!
So last but not least, this is the boba pearls I purchased. I boiled them in sugary water, & strained. I made Earl Gray tea sweetened with condensed milk, then added the pearls. So tasty!
This wasn't the boba I made (I actually got this at a restaurant with my mom!) But this gives you an idea of what it looks like =) Its worth a try! If you're lucky enough to find it, go for it! Lots of delicious flavors and combinations to choose from.
What are your favorite Ethnic stores or treats to buy?

I've never been brave enough to try the boba pearls, but they sell them at a stall in the mall...may have to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteNatalie: Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMorganvsmorgan: I totally recommend them. They have fruity flavors that remind me of a smoothy that I think would be good to start with. Let me know if you like them!
